Work in Progress

I'm working on a new piece, and would really like some feedback.
It's about the light gold borders...I rather like them but a friend has suggested maybe they are too 'choppy' and I should just frame the picture with the gold border?
I think it gives the piece a more 'artistic' flare the way the borders are, If I just frame the picture it is more 'quilterly'...am I making any sense?
What do you think, I value everyone's opinion.
And look forward to your comments.

Your flowers are beautiful, but I find the borders distracting. I would use one border or none at all. JMHO

I love the colors, love the flow of the piece, the way the petals appear kind of wind blown. My one suggestion would be to add a stem going down. The sunflowers appear to be floating, not growing. Lovely piece! Judy

the gold borders draw my eye off the quilt, away from the flowers. Sorry. :-(

I like it as is, but you could also use it as an opportunity to carry some stems or leaves out into the part beyond the gold borders.

Beautiful piece!

I would lose the bottom element entirely...too distracting. Also the borders would look great if they were mitered. Or if the inner gold border didn't cross to the outer gold border. I really like the major element. The flowers are lovely.

I agree with Norma, that the gold narrow lines are distracting and don't contribute anything IMO. You could experiment with adding say 3 short staggered gold bars on the deep border at the bottom, but this division is not the way to go.

I like the piece the way it is. The border pieces remind me of a shoji screen. It gives the flowers and the petals an Asian feel. I ike the flowers a lot, and it will abeautiful no matter which way you decide.

I have come back and looked at your photo a couple of times and It like it the way it is. I think I was first attracted to the gold borders even before I read your post. I would leave it. It looks great! You do such lovely work!

I like the way it is not centered top-to-bottom, and think it would look great if it were not centered left-to-right.

I'm not sure if it's the camera or the screen, but the gold reads very orange in the photo and is distracting. Could you stamp over it to mute it some?

I have to agree with letting one or more flowers or stems escape out of the frame-but that is not what you are asking. I would save the petals in the lower border for a label or another project. I like the floral border fabric, but not all divided up with the gold.

The center panel flowers are awesome!

I think that what is distracting with the gold borders is the manner in which they are done. Normally a framed picture would have a 'filet' type inset like your gold ones but they would mimic the rectangular shape of the piece as an outside edge. In your work there are horizontal extensions on the top and bottom which distract the eye away from the design rather than complement it.

Hi Rhoda!
Your center panel is interesting and has good use of colour. In my opinion, the colour of the border competes with your sunflower design and the gold edging distracts.
I would go with the basic design and binding.
